They are both good performers. That was not the case. Matt Granger introduces and reviews the Nikkor 50mm 14 AF-S G.
In general these are sharper with a wider aperture. Lenses with built-in focus motor focus faster and more quietly than lenses without a focus motor which rely on the cameras body focus motor. Not much difference in bokeh at f14 but the resolution of the D seems better.
A quick summary comparing the Nikon 50mm f18G to the Nikon 50mm f14G. The 14 is quite a bit sharper than the 18 as well. The D or the G.
When it comes to the battle of the 50mm 18 vs. A shorter minimum focal length allows you to get more of the scene in the photo and offers a wider angle of view than longer focal lengths. It offers great performance wide open throughout the frame and once stopped down to f28 produces very impressive results that the bigger f14G cannot match.

My 50mm 18G observations. 1 Is sharper at every aperture. Below are some pictures taken at f28 f4 100 crop and f56 to compare the sharpness and contrast.
A prime lens has a fixed focal length. Closing the aperture a bit the D seems better saturated and you can see the advantage of the Gs iris diaphragm in the out-of-focus highlights. Has or is a prime lens.
